So what is IT that modern girls think about? The Trucks seem to have found out. I guess it would take a Cindy Lauper and The Bangles re-visitation through 'A Message' Come[ing] Back' to know what has been said before. Consider it done! I know, this sounds so far fetched that I have trouble believing it. Well hear it for yourself. It's as nasty as Peaches and as benevolent as...I don't know. It just seems all new to me! Love it to make my dog sick. The Trucks are Kristin, Marissa, Lindy and Faith and you are just beginning to hear about them.

Igloofest is back to Quai Jacques Cartier for its second edition and obvisouly fat-boucing Ghis' will be there for the Ninja Tune evening (so will Spank Rock's Devlin and Darko, Daedelus and Ghostbeard). Other 'spinners' include Mateo Murphy, Milimetrik (excellent minimalism from Qwébec City-my home town!) Josh Wink, Misstress Barbara, Thomas Schumacher (no Ferrari involved, not even close!), Pheek and more.

CALVIN!!!!!

Disco is back and Calvin Harris claims to have created it! humm, well he sure has redefined it.

Calvin is from Dumphries, Scotland and is a whole-in-one with this album. Not a huge voice range à la Donna Summer, but a hell-of-a-lotta beats! He makes me get down and boogie woogie. His first attempt, I created Disco, is entirely home made. The beats are groovy, colourful and just make you wanna dance; turbo-funkiness would wrap it up nice. 2008 is the year when disco revives in popularity and I Created Disco will definitely top my best of for 2008. With the full length just recently released in the UK, he is already nominated for the US Shortlist Prize, the equivalent to the Mercury Music Prize which awards the best album of the UK. Past Shortlist winners include Cat Power, Sufjan Stevens and Damien Rice. With song titles like Colours, Neon Rocks, Vegas, Disco Heat, and Electro Man you know you'll blast in the past, sweat to 'future-disko' and look for your old Village People vinyls! North American release scheduled for Feb 2008.

Da Funk Alive

I bought the latest from Daft Punk titled Alive 2007. It’s not their first live album, there was also one in 1997. Same concept, different songs, a full live show on cd. If you have been reading this blog, then you know how much I appreciated the show at the Bell Centre this year. The visuals, the music, the energy, everything was as I expected. When I got this live album, I knew I’d be getting a little piece of the Montreal show, even though the album was recorded at the Palais Omnisport in Bercy, Paris on June 14th, 2007.





I am flabbergastingly right! I can now relive the 7th of August, 2007 anytime I feel like it. Daft Punk’s Alive 2007 is your opportunity to hear the show as you would have anywhere along their 2006-2007 world tour. BUT, you’d have to have some visuals in order to fully live the experience. I have no idea if a DVD is planned to come out soon, but if Guy Manuel and Thomas are the robotic intelligencia they claim to be, then they have definitely thought of putting togetha' a live DVD….the visuals of the show were just so freakin' rad eh!

Le Peuple de l'Herbe ben, ben verte!

Axl Rose a chanté ‘Take me down to the Paradise City where the grass is green and the girls are pretty’ (Oh won't you pleeeeeaaassseeee take me hooooome, yeeeaaahhhhh). Peut-être est-ce là que vit Le Peuple de l’Herbe.

Une pièce Jazzé très influencé de The Herbaliser débute Radio Blood Money, le 4ième album des Lyonnais Le Peuple de l’Herbe: Pee, Psychostik, N’Zeng et Spagg. En fait, tout l’album est influencé du jazz. Par contre, la pièce History Goes me rappel beaucoup Vodoo People de Prodigy que j'ai découverte avec le film Hackers en 1996; je suis depuis un peu moins inculte sur le hacking!! La pièce Trace est d’un trip-hop de cuivres, The Fall met en vedette d’la grosse guitare sombre et excitante comme si j'étais dans une poursuite, et parlant de poursuite, la pièce Quai No8 serait parfaite pour la prochaine trame sonore d’un film de James Bond. Bref, to make a long story short, Radio Blood Money me fascine au plus haut point. C’est comme si ils s’étaient faufilés dans mon subconscient pour y trouver tous les genres musicaux que j’aime et fait un album avec. Que ce soit le trip-hop, break beat, hard tech ou hip-hop, Le Peuple de l’Herbe mélange très bien les genres sur une base électro, bourré de samples et de clin d’œil. Un disque élégant rempli de groove! Voici ce qu’est du Fusion en 2007 : Le Peuple de l’Herbe sur Radio Blood Money!

Istitutional Mexican sound en espagnol por favor

Du dub, un peu de cha cha et du sprinkled ‘spoken word’ mexicain, voilà ce que donne Mexican Institute of Sound. La trompette, le violoncelle, la harpe, le piano, la guitarra y mas instruments sont les vedettes sur Pinata, le tout dernier album du D.J Mexicain et producteur Camilo Lara a.k.a Mexican Institue of Sound. Parfois jazzé, parfois pop, parfois hip-hop, Pinata est une fusion senssssssssual (prononcé en espagnol bien evidemment!) de rythmes latins qui réchauffent l’âme. Pas de samba ici, ni de meringué, c’est en somme de l’électro-latino. Ça se danse très, très bien et alimente une soirée, un party même, comme le fait la baguette de la fée des neiges aux Galeries d’Anjou.

La pièce Para No Vivir Desesperado est très envoutante (ma favorite), Katia, Tania, Paulina Y La Kim propose une harpe et des sons de cloches qui me rappellent que Noël arrive, La Kebradita est un peu slamé, un peu rapé sur un fond parsemé de synthétiseurs et A Girl Like You met en vedette du violoncelle et le beatbox de Pat C., un des collaborateurs de Camilo avec Holger Beier. Treize pièces remplient d’échantillonnages de folk Mexicain et Latin, y compris Belludita, la seule pièce de l’album qui offre quelque chose de très électro, mais qui ne dure que seulement 56 secondes. Par contre, Mi Negra A Bailal (on pourrait croire que Ghislain Poirier est d’influence) fesse dans l’dash!

Pinata je reccomande pour voyager dans un Mexique électro-acoustique sans même quitter le sol.

Yeah + Elle = Yelle!

Après Gymclass Heroes, Lilly Allen et Angels and Airwaves, voici le plus récent phénomène Myspace…Yelle.. Elle s’appelle Julie Budet, est Bretonne, et aura 25 ans le 17 janvier prochain. C’est sa réplique à Cuizinier (Je veux te Voir), membre de la formation électro-hop Française TTC pour leurs paroles ‘jugées machistes’, qui l’a mise sur la mappe mondiale musicale. 2000 écoutes en deux jours, et depuis octobre, 2007 Yelle assure la première partie de MIKA. Elle signe son premier opus accompagné de GrandMarnier (Jean-François Perrier) et coproduit avec son accolite TEPR (Tanguy Destable). Et grâce à eux, Pop-Up est sublime.

Elle définie l’électro pop d’aujourd’hui avec une saveur très présente des années 80 (notamment avec beaucoup de synthé sur, par exemple Tristesse Joie, un funk-a-licious, make that shag-a-licious Tu es Beau et la reprise de À cause des Garçons du groupe portant le même nom de 1980-le remix de cette dernière par TEPR fait d’ailleurs jouir le mouvement Techtonik). Elle est simple à l’os et ne se stress surement pas des préjugés; Les Femmes un hommage aux lesbiennes et Mon Meilleur Ami qui souligne son affection particulière pour son vibrateur! Elle est venue à Montréal dans le cadre de Pop Montréal cette année, et je présume (pfff chu même prête à gager) qu’elle sera de retour en 2008. Pop Up est d’une simplicité de deuxième niveau qui me plaît énormément!

Van She is ...Van She.

I love coincidences. I love hazard. And I love your vulnerability as an audience, waiting to discover the new IT band. Well, this band here-called Van She is the perfect example. They sound new, old, déjà vu and brand new all at once. But what amazes me about them is their capability of making you believe that they are IT! And what’s wrong with that??? But, get a hold of yourselves, they are definitely not IT.

These guys are from Australia and from what I read have been around since 2005. They have one EP to date including singles like Kelly and Sex City.

It sounds very commercial; electro-pop-indie-rock, flavoured with new wave influences is what it is. I hate their new single Cat And The Eye. It’s like the electro influences in their music died trying to break boundaries for a new listening audience, argh. I hate that! But, what I definitely looooove about these guys, is their ability to remix. Darn they are good. Go crazy trying to find Feist, Dragonette, The Presets, New Young Pony Club, Tiga, Bravery, Muscles and the list goes on and on, remixed by Van She. If only they were able to do that kind of shtuff with their own!!!



Listen for yourself, and give me your opinion. Opinions matter in music nowadays as more and more people are looking for the Next Big Thing to fill very big venues!

Been a while...

Alrighty! let's get back on track. I've been fooling around in La La Land and am now back on earth.

MÙM...d'ya know them? Maybe yes, maybe no. But, the deal is here that you HAVE TO get to know them. They’re from Iceland, are in all seven members-when live on stage-and kick it glitch style. Now, they came through Montreal a few weeks ago and since I was lost in an apocalyptic state of mind, I didn't go see them. I shall now kill myself, but before I do so...Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy! It's their new album; exquisite! It'll charm you like Fuzzy Wuzzy the bear's hair! Enchanting use of minimalist electro within a smear of indie rock sensuality. Awww! Just like Sigur Rós and Björk, Iceland artists HAVE to be on your list of discoveries. There is something in their water that’s just fascinating!!!

Dragonette

Peut-être l’avez-vous découverte sur la compilation Women & Songs, ou peut-être avec Unplaceables en 1998 ou The Cure for Bad Deeds en 2000. Bref, Martina Sorbara (la fille de Greg Sorbara, Ministère des Finances en Ontario) fait maintenant parler d’elle avec son band Dragonette et ses propos sur les 'tits'.

Ils ont fait l’ouverture de spectacles pour Duran Duran avant même d’avoir un album en magasin, font un cover de INXS, ont des lesbiennes dans leur videos (I Get Around) et font un remake de pornos des années '70 (Take it like a Man). Ils ne sont pas très N’Sync avec l’électro-pop d’aujourd’hui (ah que j’aime les jeux de mots). Galore, le premier album de Dragonette, c’est l’influence des années 80 avec un peu de pop d’aujourd’hui le tout avec la voix de Martina qui, par moment, est très semblable à celle de Gwen Stefani. Ce n'est pas excellent à première écoute. En fait, j’ai probablement besoin de plusieurs écoutes pour l’apprécier à sa juste valeur. Peut-être est-ce le changement de voix et de style musicale de Martina, ou le son hyper électro-rock commerciale de l’album qui me tracasse. Peut-être m’étais-je faite une autre idée de leur son avant même de l’écouter? My favorite, Take it Like a Man. 'Cuz I would if I could!

Martina et son hubby Dan Kurtz sont installés au UK!!! ah ben là ça dit tout! Faudrait peut-être que je me déplace…Le site officiel mentionne Dragonette au Main hall le 26 oct.

Gros, gros, gros beats sales

Star light, Star bright

Un des bands les plus appréciés et respectés de l’industrie musicale canadienne. Une meute d’artistes ont récemment rendu hommage à Stars avec l’excellente compilation Do you trust your friends? Mais c’est de leur tout récent album dont je veux vous parlez: In Our Bedroom After the War. Un 13-tracs soft, mélodieux et quelque peu électro (habituellement beaucoup plus électro) qui me plaît du début à la fin. Mais je dois avouer que je suis vendu à Stars. Lorsque on m’a conseillé ce groupe en 2001 (merci Jean-Philippe Aubin), je n’ai cessé de le vénérer. Que j’ai eu une peine d’amour, une soirée de pettage de tête dans les murs ou bedonque de relaxation dans mon bain, Stars ont su me soutenir.

Le groupe Montréalais Stars sont Torquil Campbell, Chris Seligman, Evan Cranley, Amy Millan (solo avec Honey from the Tombs en 2006) et Pat McGee. Avec In Our Bedroom After the War, mixé par Joe Chiccarelli (The White Stripes, The Shins, Morrissey), ils nous offrent un quatrième album troublant, intime, rempli d’émotions; ro-man-ti-que! ‘Horror movies that are like love stories’ dit Mr. Campbell. Parfois un soft electro-rock avec The Night Starts Here (my favourite), des fois funky comme sur The Ghost of Genova Heights et même un peu cacophonique avec Bitches in Tokyo. Mais aujourd’hui c’est la pièce Today Will Be Better, I Swear qui m’interpelle le plus. La voix de Amy est si douce, si jolie, si envoutante et lorsque Torquil (beau nom pareil?) s’y mêle…oufff. Je ne les ai encore jamais vu en sspesstacle. Ils seront de passage au National le 30 novembre avec moi collé sur la scène, en tutu et couronne, come une vrai fée des étoiles.

So who's been truly hoaxed?? Us?(we've apparently been rick rolled)Or the guy who created it? Well, he did give away all that free attention for....

As of midnight tonight, Radiohead's new album is available to pre-order exclusively from www.radiohead.com. The new album comes out in ten days and you can pay whatever you want. You can buy the Discbox or the Download (the latter is where you pay what you want). But be patient....because the server is struggling for demand.

But did he know of the album`s release?? or is he WITH the band??? You want to ask yourself the question because Radiohead is going INDIE with this one.

Maybe I`ll create a hoax like that for The Silent Dianes! Ha!
